After decades of reckless political maneuvering by entrenched political elites in DC, much of the American Southwest falls under the control of foreign cartels. The cartels establish de' facto governance in key cities, their collective territories informally referred to as "Aztlan". An armed faction led by a renegade American General arises in Dallas. The General assembles a "New American Congress" or NAC to confront the cartels and press for a constitutional convention. Negotiations fail, leading to The Great Meltdown: a period of socioeconomic collapse in which the nation fractures politically. In the violent times that follow, a mixture of cartels, militias, bandits, and gunfighters battle for dominion over the towns and highways of the Southwest. Soon, neighboring states align with the NAC. A loose political coalition forms, encompassing lands known by their residents as the Free Zone. One of many armed groups to form in the Free Zone is a loosely aligned community of ruthless smuggler/mercenaries, known as BCCs. Over a decade, most disappear or die but a few go on to prosper. One such survivor is an especially disagreeable man named Charles, of the tiny Post-Meltdown town of Fort Hill, in southeastern Oklahoma. Living alone in a private fortress in the hills outside of town, he is notorious in those parts as a deadly gunfighter. He has existed there for years, free of encumbrances and responsibility, answering to no one. Until one day a message arrives and changes everything.
